Where checkout changed
Shopify Catalog API, Checkout MCP, agentic storefronts, and AI shopping checkout language now cluster around one practical question: can the catalog and checkout stack be handed off safely to AI shopping flows?
For AI commerce teams, the next bottleneck is not a more persuasive interface. It is whether the catalog, cart, and checkout path can hold up under AI-driven product discovery.
Do not trust one conversion number
The useful question is no longer whether a purchase happened; it is which step created the hesitation, missing fact, or measurement gap.
Check the event model
- Audit the catalog layer and the transaction layer separately: searchability and attributes on one side, checkout permissions and refund responsibility on the other
- Keep the test narrow: one priority product or checkout flow before expanding recommendation, authorization, payment, and support work
What still needs proof
If the catalog is machine-readable but the checkout responsibility is vague, AI shopping can increase disputes faster than it increases conversion. Keep the original source open so the announcement, the evidence, and this site's interpretation stay separate.
